The Green-Whites were left feeling frustrated after their 2-1 loss to 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon, particularly because they conceded two goals in the space of two minutes against a side that they felt they should have beat. WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone after the game to gather the reaction to the defeat.

Head coach Ole Werner: “That was a bitter, but deserved loss, as we were inconsistent when it mattered most. In the end, the five minutes after the break were crucial. We created a good chance in the opposition’s penalty area where we could have scored if we’d attacked at pace, but we weren’t clinical enough. Up the other end, we lost too many individual battles and were punished by Union for that. This was ultimately a huge factor in the defeat. What’s more, the ref didn’t call their first goal offside, despite the fact that Zetti was obstructed and couldn’t see the ball. We have to address the things we didn’t do well today, which there were a lot of at the crucial points in the game.”

Michael Zetterer: “We gave the game away in the space of two minutes, which shouldn’t happen. We were doing alright up to that point, but weren’t able to make anything of our chances. We should not be conceding two goals in such a short period of time, especially in the way that we did. We had a clear-cut chance with Justin Njinmah shortly after the break, who made a solo run into their penalty area. We didn’t apply enough pressure when going forward in that moment, which was the case at a lot of other points in the game. We then conceded twice. Over the past two weeks, we haven’t been as solid as the back as we were previously, and we need to be scoring more goals from our chances. We’ll be working hard on improving in these areas.”

Milos Veljkovic: “It’s hard to explain why we were rattled today. We have to be better in possession and play our own game to the standard that we have done previously this season. I want to apologise to the fans who travelled here today, because we weren’t good enough in the second half. That can’t happen to us. When you concede two goals here, it’s difficult to come back and bring home any points. We have to analyse our mistakes and do better when we take on Wolfsburg.”

Jens Stage: “We dropped three points today, but were at the same standard as them throughout. We played okay, and then lost our concentration for five minutes, which we were punished for straight away.”
